Herbarium Specimens

Departmental Herbaria (HAW)

The primary research herbarium (StJ 401) houses voucher specimens from research carried out in the department and a general reference collection. See Dr. Carr.

A small teaching collection is kept in the Plant Ecology Lab (StJ 507) for the use of ecology students. See Dr. Goldstein.

  • Bishop Museum (BISH)
  • This is a major herbarium and has been designated as the official state repository. Besides the expected collection of terrestrial plants, it has the Other Hawaii Herbaria Hawaii Volcanoes, focused only on Island of Hawaii specimens. Many of the recent collections are also at BISH.

    Haleakala, a recently established collection of park plants and insects.

    National Tropical Botanical Garden, has not only Kauai plants, but many from other Pacific areas.

    Specimen Drying

    Heated driers are located in StJohn 404 (Plant Taxonomy Lab) and on the StJohn 507 (Plant Ecology Lab) lanai. If you have formalin-treated specimens, use the lanai dryer.
