The Department of Botany Minor Program offers great flexibility. Consider some of the following possibilities.

Evolutionary Botany

Students in natural sciences, including those planning to pursue post-graduate training, may find this option most attractive. Required courses, Bot 201 (Plant Evolutionary Diversity) and 462 (Plant Evolution), will be supplemented with electives from among Bot 410 (Plant Anatomy), 430 (Mycology), 450 (Natural History of Hawaiian Islands), 461 (Principles of Plant Systematics), 470 (Principles of Plant Physiology), 480 (Algal Diversity & Evolution), 662 (Advanced Systematics), and 663 (Plant Cytotaxonomy).

Tropical Field Botany

Students interested in careers related to resource management may gain valuable practical experience along this pathway. This option may be attractive to students in agriculture, environmental studies, the natural sciences, tourism, and planning. The required course, Bot 280 (Ecology of Hawaiian Coastal Algae) or 453 (Plant Ecology & Environmental Measurements), will be supplemented by electives from the courses Bot 201 (Plant Evolutionary Diversity), 350 (Resource Management and Conservation in Hawai'i), 361 (Flowering Plant Families), and 450 (Natural History of Hawaiian Islands).

An Individually Designed Program

This option will work for you regardless of your major or background. You and your faculty advisor will select courses to meet your goals and the University requirement of 15 credit hours in non-introductory courses in the Minor.

Procedure for Declaring a Botany Minor

You may select your own Departmental faculty advisor or seek assistance from the Department Chair (St. John Room 101, Phone 956-8369) or the Department's Undergraduate Student Advisor, Dr. Gerald Carr (St. John Room 406, Phone 956-8304). After you plan your program with your faculty advisor, complete a declaration form. Your advisor will submit the form to the Department for approval.

Bear in mind that courses to be used for core or major credit cannot be included in your minor and that only grades of C or above count toward your minor. Please contact your advisor as questions arise concerning your program.

One semester before you graduate, meet with your advisor to compile the courses, credits, and grades to be counted toward your minor. These data will earn you a minor certificate.
