Symbol Tables
Symbols add important information to a table. Sometime they are
a simple metaphore that helps you interpret other information in
the table. Sometimes they are the information itself.
Symbols are just small images. It is best to use .GIF formats for
this purpose since they retain all their details, they compress well, and
they can have a "transparent" background. The latter feature means
that the symbol fits into the background well.
You can create your own symbols in a paint program, copy them
from one of the extensive symbol libraries on the web, or get some
from this Web site. We have borrowed a few from other sites and
created many ourselves to provide a set of
useful icons to get you started.
