Research Interests:
My primary expertise is in forest ecophysiology: the study of physiological processes
in order to answer ecological questions. For my dissertation, I investigated the
relationship between forest canopy structure and physiological function in a tropical
rain forest in Costa Rica. I am currently managing the EPSCoR Ecohydrology Project for
my post doctoral position here at the University of Hawaii. Ecohydrology is an emerging
discipline that explores the interface between plant ecology and hydrology. I am
interested in the cycling of both carbon and water through trees, at the leaf scale,
whole-tree scale, and canopy scale.
Personal Statement:
The key question of the Hawaiian Ecohydrology Project is whether vegetation composition
affects water balance processes in Hawaiian forests. With sap flow, meteorological, and
soil moisture measurements, we will determine whether native forests show different
ecohydrological behavior than alien-dominated forests. Since moving to Hawaii, I have been
finding out how incredibly important this issue is, in terms of conservation, culture, and
economics. This project is a hugely collaborative effort, and I look forward to interacting
with scientists from a wide range of different backgrounds here at UH Manoa, UH Hilo, and
the Forest Service Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry.
