Research Interests:
- Ethnobotany of Hawai'i and the Pacific
- Ethnobotany of North American indigenous peoples (as compared with Hawai'i)
Personal Statement:
I was born in Honolulu, and grew up in Waikiki and Bingham Tract (lowest Manoa). My father had
the lease for Weli Fish Pond (now Ft. Shafter Flats). I attended the English standard system of
schools, dropping out of Roosevelt High School at the end of my junior year.
I was the second person to teach Botany 105 after Dr. Harold St. John, and changed the course
emphasis from coconuts to Hawaiian plants. I also taught (1961-67) General Botany (then Botany 100),
Flower and Tree Identification (Botany 160), and Science for Secondary School Teachers (Science 650-651).
I continued to teach ethnobotany in the summers after we moved to the Mainland and Europe. I
participated in the current Botany 105 course revision.
I retired from the Foreign Service of the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 1992, having
served as an International Regional Director and Plant Health Attache. I was the Plant Quarantine
Officer for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), from 1975 to 1978.
Other Federal agencies that I've been with include the Department of Interior (National Park Service),
Army & Air Force Exchange Service (European Exchange System), and Environmental Protection Service
(Office of Pesticide Programs).
My interests in Hawaiian Ethnobotany have been primarily in developing lists of cultural plant uses
and obtaining more data about these uses.
