Biography
I was born in New Jersey and raised in the Pennsylvania Dutch
Country of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I received a Bachelor of Science
degree in Forest Resource Management from Virginia Tech in the fall
of 1987. Following graduation, I worked in the forestry industry
for the Chesapeake Corporation in northern Virginia, Westvaco (Walterboro,
South Carolina) and Environmental Consultants, Inc. in Southampton,
Pennsylvania. In the fall of 1989, I volunteered to serve in the
United States Peace Corps and was assigned to the Kingdom of Tonga,
South Pacific. From 1989 - 1993 I managed the Diversified Fruit
Tree Development Project for the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
Following my Peace Corps experience I returned to the U.S. and enrolled
at the University of Florida in the Horticultural Science Department.
In December 1995, I received a Master of Science degree. I received
a Ph.D. degree in the Department of Botany (ethnobotany) at the
University of Florida in the summer of 2001. I am currently the
co-founder and director of the Centre for International Ethnomedicinal
Education and Research. My travels for 2004 included Japan, Thailand,
Switzerland, Germany, Kosovo, Macedonia, Albania and Tuscon, Arizona.
Other countries I have worked include American Samoa, Austria, Brazil,
Belgium, Canada, Cook Islands, Czech Republic, England, Fiji, France,
French Polynesia, Germany, Guatemala, Hawaii, Holland, Hungary,
Jamaica, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Scotland,
Spain, St. Croix, St. Thomas, Switzerland, Thailand, Tonga, and
Samoa.
My current research projects are addressing:
1) Redevelopment of the Herbaria
collections, planned migration of specimen data to KE EMu database
software
2)
Development of e-field guides and regional e-floras.
3) BOT160 Campus Plants - deliver enhancemed course content via
the Internet.
