Island Location Features
Big Island Hawaii Volcanoes Observatory Silene hawaiiensis with Halemaumau in the background.  This camera is sending images wirelessly from a "rock" to the HVO tower where there is a base station connected to the Internet.  Two computers in the field manage the timing, picture taking and communications.  802.11 is being used to communicate.  Power is being supplied by a 12 amp-hour rechargeable battery.  Three "rocks" are used to hide the equipment.

Big Island HVNP Research Center Hourly views of the rainforest across the parking lot from the Research Center.  Images start on July 13, 2000.

The cameras are Nikon Coolpix 700 or 800 digital cameras. They take images that are 1600 x 1200 pixels and send these to the PODS server.
