Emeritus Professor Receives International Award

UH Emeritus Professor Dieter Mueller-Dombois received the international Reinhold Tüxen Award in May. Mueller-Dombois taught courses in botany and related plant sciences for nearly 30 years at UH Manoa. The Tüxen Award is presented every two years to honor outstanding scientists in vegetation ecology and related disciplines. It is named after a distinguished research scientist, professor and citizen of the town of Rinteln, near the location where Mueller-Dombois himself was born and raised.

Mueller-Dombois taught courses in general botany, plant evolution, phytogeography and physiological and vegetation ecology. He co-authored several books including the widely used text entitled Aims and Methods of Vegetation Ecology and Vegetation of the Tropical Pacific Islands. Mueller-Dombois has also received the UH Double Merit Award for Distinguished Service and the Hawai`i Governor's Award for service as Commissioner of the State Natural Area Reserves Systems.
