THE CHANGING MEKONG
impacts of climate change on biocultural diversity

What is Changing in the Mekong?

“When we are no longer able to change a situation –
we are challenged to change ourselves.”
  Viktor Frankl (1905-1997)

Climate experts project that temperature in the Tibetan Plateau will be above the global mean over the 21st century. In addition, an increase in precipitation is also expected over the plateau. So how should the 60 million people whose livelihoods are dependent on the river react to such news?

There are more than 70 ethnic groups living in the Mekong River Basin. What is to become of this cultural diversity in the face of impending climate change? Will local knowledge of the environment help sustain these cultures in the basin?

Growing demand for electricity in the region has led to the development of dams along the Mekong River. How will this impact the 1200 fish species, of which the majority is migratory, in the basin?

About 50% of the Lower Mekong Basin was covered by forests thirty years ago. Currently, forest cover has been reduced to about 27% as a result of population growth and logging. What will the vegetation landscape be like in the 21st century?
