Isabella Aiona Abbott Awards


Purpose:

To support and encourage undergraduate research excellence in Hawaiian Botany, terrestrial or marine.

Eligibility:

Undergraduates at UHM who are full-time and whose original scientific research focuses on Hawaiian plant biology.

Criteria:

Academic merit as indicated in one of three ways:

  • Completed research paper on Hawaiian Botany, from course work or directed research
  • Research plan to conduct research on Hawaiian plants
  • Manuscript accepted for publication

Conditions of Awards:

The award will range from $250-$500. The amount depends on whether the request is for a completed paper, budget for research or publication costs. More than one award may be given in each year, but each awardee is limited to a single award. Funds may be used for inter-island travel, supplies, publication charges, or as cash recognition in the case of a completed research paper.

Application:

Application deadline is during the Fall semester, see the Botany Office (St John 101) for specific dates. Applications should be submitted to the Chair, Department of Botany, UHM, and may include work from the current semester. Research proposals should indicate criterion selected from above, describe goals, pertinent details, a budget (maximum 5 pages) and address, phone and e-mail for contact. Publication costs should be documented.
