Dissertation Title:
Facilitating restoration of native Hawaiian plant Alyxia stellata with habitat modeling

Personal Statement:
I am broadly interested in terrestrial plant ecology and conservation, specifically with culturally important species. My dissertation research seeks to address the loss of biodiversity in the Hawaiian archipelago, and specifically the loss of indigenous Alyxia stellata (J. R. & G. Forst.) Roem. & Schult. (Apocynaceae) or maile. This once ubiquitous plant is an important ecological, cultural and economic species. In developing a GIS-based habitat suitability model, I hope to identify sites that meet habitat requirements in order to establish new populations of A. stellata. The model will be validated by outplanting A. stellata seedlings in a wide variety of field conditions, and by measuring survivorship, growth, plant stress and reproduction. Through this study, I hope to show A. stellata past range and habitat reduction, and its present range. As well, I hope to predict future suitable habitat in order to increase successful reintroduction of A. stellata.
