Thesis Title:
Mouflon range and rare plants on the island of Hawai`i

Personal Statement:
Increasingly, Hawai`i’s rare plants (including the endemic geranium and silversword pictured below) survive only behind barriers that repel introduced ungulates. Island biodiversity is being destroyed by mouflon, deer, and feral cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats. Yet the number, range, and behavior of ungulates in the Hawaiian islands are poorly understood, as are the root causes of the failure to control ungulates at the required landscape scale. I am most interested in work that addresses the barriers to effective ungulate control: technical, social, and political.
