Dissertation Title:
Harvesting and management effects on Syngonanthus nitens (Eriocaulaceae) population dynamics, in Jalapão region, Tocantins State, Brazil

Research Interests:
  • Tropical ecology and conservation
  • Native plants management and uses
  • Ethnoecology

Personal Statement:
My major interest is biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. I am specifically interested in the ecological, social and economic effects of plant harvesting from natural ecosystems. My dissertation research is focused on Brazilian Non-Timber Forest Product (NTFP), known as golden grass, from the Cerrado Biome, which is a savanna-like vegetation that originally occupied 25% of Brazil (more than 2 million Km2). I have been working in the Jalapão Region since 2002 and helped develop regional rules to the harvesting of golden grass. With the research of my dissertation I aim to model the natural population dynamics and identify the effects of harvesting and management of humid grasslands with fire. These results will provide more information about how to maintain the harvesting of golden grass ecologically sustainable.
