Thesis Title:
Quantifying transpiration in native and alien forests on Hawaii: from species to stand
Personal Statement:
My thesis work focuses on measuring the transpiration rates of dominant native and alien plant
species in wet forest of Honaunau, Hawai'i. Transpiration, or plant water use, is one of the
most important means by which soil water is returned to the atmosphere. By measuring and
modeling water use of different species and scaling these measurements to the stand level,
we can begin to understand whether and to what extent species differences and native/alien
status might matter to the water balance at larger scales... and water resources. The species
I am studying include Hawaiian endemic tree Metrosideros polymorpha ('ohi'a), endemic hapu'u
(tree fern) species Cibotium glaucum and C. menziesii, and introduced timber trees
Fraxinus uhdei (tropical ash) and Eucalyptus saligna x grandis.
