'ie'ie is a shrub-like vine. It clambers along the ground and forms a ground cover in some places. However, when it encounters a tree, it produces adventitious roots which allow the stem to grow up the trunk and out onto the branches. In some cases, like the image below (left), there are more 'ie'ie leaves on a tree than its own.

Its large roots encircle the trunk and produce smaller roots that become firmly anchored in the bark. These are called adventitious roots because they come from the stem rather than preexisting roots.
