These plants produce large inflorescences which are attended by colorful leaves. The male infloresences are spectacular. It is the leaves near the inflorescence which supply most of the color. The female inflorescence is less colorful.

Overview of Male 'ie'ie Infloresences: They are surrounded by colorful leaves. The actual flowers are greatly reduced in size and complexity. They are assembled on the yellow cylindrical axes at the center.

Female 'ie'ie Inflorescence: The flowers are the   WB01436_.gif (236 bytes) individual units that are assembled around the three cylindrical axes. The leaves associated with the female inflorescence are not as brightly colored as those with male flowers. 'ie'ie is related to hala (Pandanus) and if you look closely at each female flower you can see the resemblance of their fruits.
