Early electron microscope images of many membranes yielded the same 3-tired
image. This was called the "Unit Membrane". More
recent studies have shown that biological membranes are covered with wart-like particles.

The three layers were thought to represent a Protein Lipid sandwich with the lipids in the
middle. Uneven particle-like areas are seen in this
computer-enhanced image.
