Root

These photos show the overall apearance of the ukiuki root. There is a uniseriate epidermis with some root hairs emerging from this layer. Within is the cortex, followed by the stele, and the most interior feature is the pith. You may notice the presence of cells that contain a yellow-orange substance that are not-so-randomly scattered immediately exterior to the stele. My guess is secretory ducts. What do you think?

Your Micrographs are outstanding!!!!!!!!

Here are photos of the outer portion of the ukiuki root. You can see very well that the epidermis has thick walls (wall deposition) which is a xeromorphic trait. Also the presence of an exodermis with slightly thickened cell walls immediately interior to the epidermis helps keep water in. Is that a secretory duct I see?

These look more like secretory cells.

These photos take a closer look at the stele and everything within. The endodermis with a very thick casparian strip is extremely revealing in a few of these frames. Immediately interior is the pericycle of about two cell layers thick. The polyarch arrangement of the vascular elements is typical of monocots and is displayed clearly here. The phloem and xylem alternate. The polarized frame reveals the thickness and organization of the endodermis and casparian strip.
