Podocarpus
is a Southern Hemisphere Gymnosperm.
It is grown as a shrub locally but full-sized trees are also observed in Hawaii. They
do not have a striking architecture. Podocarpus has a strap-like
leaf with a definite midrib and lamina.
The midrib is a little unusual in that it is larger on the adaxial side of the leaf than
on the abaxial side. It does not have a conical growth form which is typical for conifers,
and it resembles an angiosperm from a distance. However, it has exposed ovules like other
Gymnosperms.
