Podocarpus Leaves

Next Page

Podocarpus is a Southern Hemisphere Gymnosperm.Podocarpusdraw.jpg (14706 bytes)
It is grown as a shrub locally but full-sized trees are also observed in Hawaii. They do not have a striking architecture. Podocarpus  has a strap-like leaf with a definite midrib and lamina. The midrib is a little unusual in that it is larger on the adaxial side of the leaf than on the abaxial side. It does not have a conical growth form which is typical for conifers, and it resembles an angiosperm from a distance. However, it has exposed ovules like other
Gymnosperms.

Podocarpus Leaves and Ovules: Note the Midrib and Lamina of the Leaves. The Ovules are the forsty blue objects. They are not organized into cones but are borne on short branches. Podocarpus trees can be seen near the makai side of Hamilton Library & mauka of Kuykendall Hall.
