A carrot root makes a good support for hand sections.

Trim a carrot to a size that is easy to hold and is large enough to hold the specimen.

Blot the outer cut surfaces so that they are not slipery.

Make a slit or opening in the carrot that will accomadate the specimen.

Place the specimen into the slit.

Squeeze the carrot with your fingers to secure the specimen.

Make a transverse slice with a razor blade to provide a uniform flat surface.

Slice sections rapidly as described earlier & float them in a Petri dish of water. Treat these like free-hand sections.

If carrots are unavailable, find a local plant that has similar properties and use it.

Use of a carrot will result in cellular debris which may contaminate the sections. This may be a small price to pay with difficult specimens. Look for this in the carrot microphotos.
