Some C4 Plants

WB01338_1.gif (869 bytes) C4 photosynthesis is not widely distributed from a taxonomic perspective. Certain families like the Gramineae (Grasses like Sugarcane & Corn), Cyperaceae (Sedges) and Chenopodiaceae (Atriplex) have many C4 species. Approximately 16 families are known to have C4 photosynthesis. This includes some Monocots and Dicots.

Cross Section of Cyperus laevigatus stem: Note the outer Photosynthetic Vascular Bundles.

The outer photosynthetic Vascular Bundles from C. laevigatus (Makaloa) stems have Kranz Anatomy and
C4 Carbon Fixation.

Atriplex sp. (Desert Holly) is a member of the Chenopodiaceae.
