The goal of this class is to relate the major structural features of plants and algae to their functional significance. This will include microscopic and macroscopic features. The course is designed to complement Inside Tropical Ecosystems (BOT 351) & to provide an alternative to Plant Anatomy (BOT 410). There is some overlap with BOT 201.
Instructor: Dr. David T. Webb (St. John 412) 956-8028 dave@hawaii.edu (E-Mail is the Best Way to Reach me!)

Important Web Sites

I have located Important Websites which will act as supplementary "Textbooks" for this class (See Below)
*BOTANY Online - Hypertext Library* http://www.rrz.uni-hamburg.de/biologie/b_online/e00/
This is an excellent Reference for many topics. It has an Alphabetical Index which can be
used to locate specific topics. It also has Chapter-like sections.

James Mauseth - Plant Anatomy Website
This contains many images of plant structures that will compliment those I have included on the DVD and my Course Website
This is the first place I would look for information that is not readily available. I have had good luck finding references for obscure scientific terms by doing a simple search with this Website. Use Scientific Terms and Names to narrow the search results.
Google also has a Scholar Link that takes you to Journal Articles and other "hard" scientific references.
This site has an excellent Dictionary. It has other features including Tutorials.

Computer Availability
The price of personal computers has fallen to a level where they are available at $300 - 400. Even the least expensive PC is more than adequate for this class and most other classes.
I have a PC in my lab that can be used occasionally. See me if you are in extreme need of a PC and I will do what I can to help you.
Weekly Quiz:
To help you keep up to date with your studies, we will have a Quiz during the first 10 Minutes of each Friday. There will NOT be a Quiz on the first Friday of the Semester. Each Quiz will be worth 10 points x 12. Total = 120 points

There will be 4 lecture Exams given at strategic times during the Semester. Exams will be announced at least two weeks in advance. Each will be worth 100 points.
Total = 400 Points
Final Exam: The Final Exam will occur during exam week and will be worth 150 Points.
Total EXAM Points = 670
Study Guides & Worksheets:
These will be distributed near the start of each Topic Set. I will grade at random 1 page from each of these = 10 points each.
Study Guide Points = Vary depending on progress during the semester. These points will be added to the Total Number of Exam points and treated in the same way.
Your Final Grade will be determined by the Average of all your Quizzes, Exams and Study Guide Points.
I don't use a curve. Everybody can get an A. (I don't use +/-). [100 - 90% = A; 89 - 80 = B; 79 - 70 = C; 69 - 60 = D; 59 - 0 = F]
Total Number of Points = 600
[100 - 90% = A; 89 - 80 = B; 79 - 70 = C; 69 - 60 = D; 59 - 0 = F]
