Lighting fire for experimental burn at Puu Kohola National Historic Site, Hawaii Island.
Tall plants are nativepili grass (Heteropogon contortus), short plants in the foreground
are buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris), an African invader.

One of our experimental burn plots after the smoke has cleared. This plot contains replicated
subplots that have been subjected to different treatments (water, seed additions, no burn, etc)
in order to assess factors affecting the relative competitive ability of native pili grass and alien
buffel grass.
