| D. imbricata | Natural Hybrid | D. waialealae |
A bewildering array of Dubautia hybrids occurs in the summit area of Waialeale and some of the complexity apparently stems from hybridization between D. imbricata subsp. acronaea (represented here by subsp imbricata) and D. waialealae. Three putative hybrid individuals are illustrated above. The hybrid on the left is growing in situ while the other two are cultivated plants derived from cuttings of two different individuals taken from the field. Five putative hybrids of this combination had a mean pollen stainability of 89% and two of these available for observation exhibited apparently normal chromosome pairing (14II). The formal name Dubautia waialealae var. megaphylla Sherff has been applied to this hybrid combination.
