This was the first hybrid produced that combined the genomes of Hawaiian and mainland Madiinae. Though vigorous in cultivation, the combination is highly sterile at the diploid level due to very low pairing of chromosomes of the parental genomes. For more information see Amer. J. Bot. 83:653-660.
