This is a popular event every May 1st. While the line waiting to view the leis is not too long, it moves slowly. Everyone is very interested in seeing the details of the craftsmanship.

There are lei stands outside the viewing area, many of which offer high-quality leis for purchase.

This was the 72nd observance of this annual event. It is sponsored by the City and County of Honolulu.

Please Note:

These pictures were taken with a Sony Cybershot (DSC-F55) digital camera without using flash. The contest leis were in the shade (not optimal for good pictures -- notice the last two (non-contest) pictures which were taken in full sunlight for a comparison).  The camera was handheld at arms distance and there was a slight breeze. That explains some of the slightly fuzzy pictures.  The original resolution was 1600 x 1200 pixels.  Each picture was tone balanced and sharpened using Micrografx Picture Publisher 8. A 640 x 480 pixel image was cropped out of each image (or in a few cases, the entire image was reduced to these dimensions).  These cropped images were then reduced to 320 x 240 pixels and sharpened again.  The smallest images are the thumbnails shown here. The other two sizes are available by clicking the small thumbnail (640 x 480) or binocular icon (1600 x 1200).

The order of the contest entries shown above is simply the order in which they were displayed.

There was no attempt to record all of the entries.  There are probably errors and omissions on this page.  Sorry about that.
