ICS 101: Lecture 1

Introduction

Part 1 Lecture Index
The General Approach

This is a new approach to learning the basic applications used on personal computers. It is based on a traditional lecture and laboratory course at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Because all of you are spread out across the state, there are limitations on how you can get the lecture materials. From my perspective, one of the greatest difficulties is that you can't hear my lectures.

As a substitute, I'm writing them out for you to read. That's not as much fun, for you or for me!

However, it will get you the basic material that you need to support the theory part of this course. The purpose of the lectures is to present this "theory" material.

The syllabus lists all of the lecture topics presented in the UHM version of this course.  Not all apply to you so they are not supported with links.  (If you are interested in these other lectures, contact me and I'll make them available to you.)

Projects

You need to go beyond the lecture materials and have actual hands-on experience with some of the key applications.

In this version of the course, the hands-on part is based on projects.

You should be able to do these projects on your own. There is a manual available that will give you some help. You can also get help by asking questions with email.

Getting Started

The class schedule shows how the lectures and projects are related. You should cover the lecture materials before trying the projects.  Doing the projects properly always involves applying what has been discussed in the lectures.

There are deadlines for the projects. You should not wait until the deadline to submit your work.
