Distribution & Habitat Native to tropical and subtropical America.  In Hawai'i, this grass occurs from 210-1,310 m, primarily in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, in open mesic sites, grasslands and along roadsides. (Wagner, et al. 1990: 1590)
