Distribution & Habitat Found scattered in dry to mesic forests, often on lava.  Found on East Maui and from several collections in valleys in the Hamakua District on Hawai`i (Wagner, et al. 1990: 218).

General Appearance
These are understory trees that are usually found between 2 and 8 m tall (Wagner, et al. 1990: 218). Kipuka Puaulu

Leaves
These are large leaves, 6 to 15 cm long and 2.5 to 4.6 cm wide (Wagner, et al. 1990: 218)..

The leaves are arranged with 3 to 4 per node.

The upper surface of the leaf is glossy and dark green with a prominent midrib and conspicuous secondary veins.

Flowers & Fruits
The flowers are relatively open.

The flowers are just developing on the right.

The fruits are yellow or plum colored and may have streaks of brown.  They are 5 to 6 cm long and 2.8 to 3.6 cm wide (Wagner, et al. 1990: 218).

Natural History This species appears to have originated from an individual cultivated in Kipuka Puaulu.  There are now a number of individuals that appear to be the offspring of this transplant (Wagner, et al.1990: 218.)
