General Appearance
A mat forming shrub, that is a sub-erect individual.

Adult plants have stems along the ground which turn up at the tips.  The branches with flowers are erect and may be up to two feet long (Lamoureux 1996: 72).

Parts of the plants frequently die.  This contributes abundant organic matter to the otherwise barren lava flows, changing the environment for later invaders.
