Distribution & Habitat This species is reported growing from 270 to 1,220 m, although there are reports of it being found at higher elevations (between 1,685 to 2,285 m).  It is found only on Hawai`i Island (Wagner, et al. 19XX: 1128).
Locations in this Guide Devil's Throat? (One plant, about half way between the road and the pit crater on the mauka side of the rift (crack).
General Appearance
This is a shrub with stems 2 to 4 (occasionally 6) m long (Wagner, et al. 19XX; 1128).  The branches droop.
Leaves
Leave are arranged opposite.  The are 18 to 60 mm long and 12 to 25 mm wide (Wagner, et al. 19XX: 1128).
Flowers & Fruits
The fruit are bright orange or yellowish orange.  The are 5 to 6 mm long.  There are persistent calyx teeth (Wagner, et al. 19XX: 1128).
