Distribution & Habitat Native to eastern North America.  Introduced to Hawaii prior to 1924, common to dominant along roadsides and in disturbed mesic forest and shrubland, especially on ridges.  Found from 50 - 1,200 m on O'ahu and Hawai'i (Wagner, et al. 1990: 1497).

The leaves are 35 cm long and 2 to 5 mm wide.  They have a strongly keeled lower surface (Wagner, et al. 1990: 1497).

Natural History The first collection in Hawai`i was in 1924 (Wagner, et al. 1990: 1497).
Conservation This is a fire-tolerant species that can expand its range in the Park as a result of fires, whether they are man-caused or the result of volcanic events (Wagner, et al. 1990: 63).
