Ethical standards are found in all cultures. All individuals have a set of core values that are used to make moral and ethical decisions. Collectively, shared ethics form the basis of a culture or community. Individuals without consistent ethical standards are not accepted into cultures and are socially dysfunctional. It is a false assumption that scientists have no ethics because they are "impartial observers". Determination of individual scientific and personal values and standards is essential to conducting effective research studies. This episode discusses some ethical considerations that are important to ethnobotanists.
