Central Research Questions

Six Central Questions: answered through surveys, public & private discussions, and the internet

1. Which internationally important psychoactive plants are grown, processed, and utilized in Hawaii?

2. What are the intentions and experiences of the people who are involved with these plants?

3. Have these intentions and experiences changed over time? Have there been any experiences that people would describe as life-changing?

4. What tangible forms of cultural and technological innovation have developed from the usage and understanding of these plants? Has the usage and understanding led to transformations in any of the following areas: social relations, political awareness, environmental concern, and images of the future?

5. What are the emerging political, philosophical, and cultural issues surrounding these plants? Do they disclose ethical issues?

6. How significant is the wider world (via travel, visitors, the Internet) in supporting local knowledge and practice? How independent or interdependent is local knowledge from this global knowledge?
