The 'Ihi'ihi Protection Team

Welcome! The 'Ihi'ihi Protection Team is a group of volunteers from across O'ahu that comes together at Koko Head, about once a month, to restore degraded habitat of the endangered Hawaiian fern 'ihi'ihi (Marsilea villosa).

If you would like to join our email list, please contact Marian Chau at mmchau@hawaii.edu.
Next Koko Head Restoration Community Workday
When: Sunday, August 29, 2010
Where: 'Ihi'ihilauakea Crater (Koko Head, above Hanauma Bay)
Time: 8:00 am at Hanauma Bay parking lot. Return around 1:00 pm.

(We meet at the sidewalk on the bay side of the parking lot)

We will hike around the crater rim to the 'ihi'ihi habitat. The hike is a mile or so of steep and sometimes rocky terrain in exposed, sunny areas - but with great views and other native Hawaiian plants at the top. Bring plenty of water, lunch/snacks, sunscreen, sturdy footwear with good tread, comfortable gloves, and weeding tools. If you don't have tools, we may have some extra, and/or you can hand weed. Please be sure your shoes and gear are free of dirt and seeds that may introduce invasive weeds to the site.

We'll continue to maintain the buffer around several small patches of endangered Marsilea villosa ferns. Careful weeding within the patches, targeted weed control, and customized fire breaks are on the menu of actions. We'll assess the site and the effort when we get there.

Usually we break for lunch in the shade and a little relaxation before hiking back down. Your $1 parking fee will be reimbursed at the shack when leaving with a receipt validated by the Hanauma Bay office.

If you need more information please e-mail Marian Chau at mmchau@hawaii.edu or Larry Abbott at lra@hawaiiantel.net. We hope to see you there!
