Grades
Grades will be based upon tasks that are completed on-time. The tasks for the semester are as follows:
- Maritime Center Worksheet due

- Mid-term Exam to be taken on

June 18: 5%
- Bishop Museum Worksheet due
June 23:

- Interview Writing Assignment due

Grades will be assigned based on a percentage of
the total obtained. Students who are very close to a boundary should not bother to ask to be raised to the next higher grade.
- A+ = 96% of the total for the above
six tasks. Extra credit cannot be used to receive an A+.
- A
= 90% of the total for the above
six tasks. Extra credit cannot be used to receive an A.
- B+ =
86% of the total for the above six tasks plus any extra credit earned.
- B
= 80% of the total for the above
six tasks plus any extra credit earned.
- C+ =
76% of the total for the above six tasks plus any extra credit earned.
- C
= 70% of the total for the above
six tasks plus any extra credit earned.
- D
= 60% of the total for the above
six tasks plus any extra credit earned.
- F
= below 60% of the total for the above
six tasks plus any extra credit earned.
Extra Credit. Extra credit is given grudgingly, and
only with much work. Extra credit must be approved by the
instructors before it is done.
Each approved extra credit task is worth up
to 3% of the total grade, and no more than
10% of the grade may be earned through extra
credit. ALL extra credit is due by
June 27, 2008 (no later than 1 p.m.). Extra credit projects can include the following kinds of tasks:
- Participation in regular work events wherein ethnobotany knowledge, skills, etc. may be learned.
[e.g., work in the Hawaiian Studies Lo'i, work in a community Lo'i such as in
Waianai, Kahana, Waiahole, etc.

Participation in Ethnobiology Society
at UH projects (www.botany.hawaii.edu/ethnobio/projects.htm)].
- Participation in a training workshop wherein ethnobotany skills are learned (e.g., Bishop Museum workshops, Japanese craft workshops through the Japanese Cultural Center, Lua or other
martial arts weapons workshops, Temari/Center
for Asian & Pacific Arts workshops or
classes).
- State
Department of Land & Natural Resources, Lyon Arboretum,
The Nature Conservancy training and activities involving
out-planting of native species where knowledge of the plants and cultural traditions are learned.
- Working as a volunteer in cultural festivals that involve ethnobotany (e.g., the 'awa festival, taro festivals).
- Production of additional family interview papers intended to be used for family records.
No extra credit is given for:
- mowing lawns, pulling weeds, or other horticultural activities.
- participation in regular training in hula halau, lua groups, clubs, churches, fireman support groups, political ralleys/protests, etc.
- farming or growing gardens (some exceptions may be given where cultural knowledge of plants is clearly being learned).
ALL extra credit is due by
December 05 (no later than 1 p.m.).
Missed classes/exams. It is expected that most students will miss a few class sessions. These may not be made up.
Students with special needs for class should contact the instructor early in the course so that special arrangements may be made.
