Analysis:  A preliminary heuristic analysis of the data matrix in Table 3 resulted in six most parsimonious trees of 23 steps, CI=.69, RI =.55.  A strict consensus tree (Figure 1, to the right) revealed a unresolved assemblage of genera except for the pairing of Liagora (Liagoraceae) and Yamadaella (Dermonemataceae), two genera not historically considered to be closely related.   This analysis suggests the need for additional characters.  Morphological characters combined with molecular data would offer strong support for taxonomic groupings and a level of resolution for the red algae not possible at this time. (Contributed by PS Vroom.)
