ISLAND OF MOLOKAI

Pu'u Koa'i

This site was south of Papohaku beach park and was a small cove composed entirely of boulders and basalt shelves. There were extensive tidepools and a very diverse intertidal system here. Several collections were made along both the north and south sides of the bay. Huge mats of Caulerpa racemosa and Caulerpa peltata were found in the lower intertidal. A few large patches of Acanthophora spicifera were found in tidepools in the upper intertidal. There was no apparent human activity occurring on shore aside from a small horse ranch.
