ISLAND OF MOLOKAI

kaunakakai harbor

The reef flat on either side of the road leading out to the harbor was surveyed at this site. The substrate was soft sediment/mud with small rocks entirely colonized by macroalgae. The most common species seen here were Hypnea musciformis, Acanthophora spicifera, Spyridia filamentosa, Lyngybya majuscula and Caulerpa sertularrioides. The rock breakwall bordering the southern portion of the harbor was also surveyed but very little algae was found here. In fact, coral was seen growing all the way to the surface of the water along the breakwall/channel. Inside the harbor, we examined some of the boats that were docked in slips. The hull of one boat in particular that appeared to not have moved in a long time was completely covered with Acanthophora spicifera (see in photographs shown above). There was a lot of activity on shore at this site (Kaunakakai town was directly onshore from the harbor) aside from the general characteristics of a harbor. There were a lot of houses and mangroves covering the shoreline in this area.

Table 1.  Information regarding site characteristics and alien species abundances. The  number recorded for each alien species of algae is a ranking of the abundance of that species at each given site. Impact ranking values range from 0 (not present) to 10 (100% cover).
