SUMMARY

The primary goals of this research project were to document and map the distributions of all of the alien species of marine algae in Hawai'i. An alien species is defined as any species that is introduced into a region where it does not naturally occur (i.e. non indigenous or non native). This introduction can be intentional or non intentional.  Another aspect of this research project will be to document any locations which seem to be impacted by "invasive algae". An invasive alga can be both native or nonnative and is defined by it's ability to bloom under certain conditions. Both alien and invasive algae are of primary concern in the coral reef environment due to the ability of these plants to out compete native members of the ecosystem and rapidly reduce biodiversity.

This research project sought  to identify the growth parameters of these algal species under a variety of nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) regimes and to determine if there are any  predators/herbivores  that will consume these plants in the field. The information gathered here has allowed researchers to begin to understanding the dynamic characteristics of these plants such as dispersal mechanisms and spread potential both within and outside of the state of Hawai'i. This fundamental research will provide both state and federal agencies with data that is pertinent and necessary to management, conservation and biodiversity in Hawaii.
