New Job At NCEAS beginning Oct 1, 2005

NCEAS

Marine Ecologist, Phycologist

-I am currently working as a faculty researcher in the Department of Botany at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. My primary research is focused on understanding factors that influence marine community dynamics. I like to use a combination of techniques to address ecological questions including field observation and experimentation, ecophysiology, modeling, GIS, etc. My current research involves determining how anthropogenic impacts affect coral reefs. Specifically I have been interested identifying how humans alter marine community dynamics.

-I have been involved in numerous projects spanning from pristine to highly degraded reefs ecosystems. I am interested in not only identifying the factors that are important in causing ecosystem degradation but also in trying to determine if restoration is possible. My research has typically been conservation orientated and I usually work directly with natural resource managers to assure that science-based management can occur. I have been studying algal blooms of both native and exotic species in Hawaii for the past five years. The pictures at the bottom of this page represent just a few of the species that I am currently working on in Hawaii.
