Societies and Clubs

Hawaiian Botanical Society

BotSoc promotes understanding of plant life in the Hawaiian Islands. Particular concern is given to the preservation of native plants and ecological systems in Hawaii.

The Hawaiian Botanical Society meets the first Monday of every month in the St. John Auditorium (room 011). Annual dues are $7.50 (faculty), $4.00 (students), and $10.00 (family).

Graduate students are welcome and encouraged to get involved.

Graduate Student Organization

The Botany Department has a graduate student representative to this organization that lobbies for the rights of graduate students. GSO also has funds available for travel awards.

Hawaiian Academy of Sciences

This is a private, nonprofit professional society which promotes scientific knowledge, particularly related to Hawaii and the Pacific area. Founded in 19225, the Academy is affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

The Academy hosts the annual Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair. The Academy has a program of quarterly meetings which feature science topics of interest to a wide variety of members. Also, the Academy sponsors or co-sponsors public lectures by prominent local or visiting scientists and other eminent persons.
