The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is an non-profit organization whose goal is to conserve natural diversity by purchasing land to create and manage preserves. Funding comes from donations. Currently the TNC is managing six preserves: one on Maui, three on Molokai, one on Kauai, and Koko Head on Oahu. The TNC always needs volunteers for weeding or clearing trails, internships are also available which can pay as much as a teaching assistantship position. The TNC is always exchanging information with the scien tific community to benefit research and to gain new knowledge for input into the database.

Currently they are creating a database that aids in evaluating land. This database contains all rare plants, animals and natural communities of Hawaii. The accumulation of information for the database is on-going and is covered under the Heritage Program.
