You are assigned desk space in St. John, as long as your academic program is progressing satisfoctorily. Assignments are made by the Chair of the botany Department using the general guidelines of the program of study, availability of space and seniority. Check with the office staff to find out your assignment. if you take a leave of absence, follow the policy given in the Graduate Student Guidelines regarding the disposition of your personal property.You are expected to manage your office space in a way that respects the privacy and security of your neighbors. Problems that reoccur too frequently in the rooms with Graduate Student offices include:
- Social events, such as cooking, dominate.
- Personal belongings proliferate and spill over into common areas and other student's spaces.
- Posessions "disappear."
- Last person out not locking the door.
As a responsible professional, each occupant of the room is expected to practice good citizenship.
Note that if there are chemicals being used for teaching or research in the laboratory where you have a desk, there must be no foodstuffs, beverages or cooking. It is all against OSHA regulations. We are monitored frequently and the department will be cited for even minor infractions of the rules. Fines must be paid out of scarce departmental funds.
