Bishop Museum

Located off the H-1 freeway at the Likelike Highway, the Bishop Museum is a non-profit institution that is recoginzed as the principal museum of the Pacific and one of the world's leading scientific institutions. It is also the official State museum. They rely on memberships, admissions, sales and contributions to keep the natural and cultural history of Hawaii and the Pacific alive. These funds also keep their programs and research efforts vital and productive. The Museum's exhibits display the best, the most beautiful and the most interesting artifacts, but they also have a full range of collections that far exceeds the capacity of the galleries. These include, 100,000 Hawaiian and Pacific artifacts, 6,000,000 Marine and Island shells, 250,000 plant specimens and much more. The Main Galleries are open Monday-Saturday and the first Sunday of each month. The admission is $4.95 (per adult) which entitles you to visit all public galleries and buildings including the planetarium. Hours: 9-5. Phone: 847-3511.

    This is the official repository for herbarium specimens in Hawaii. Large collections of flowering plants, algae and bryophytes are well maintained by a professional curitoral and research staff. A number of projects, such as the Flora of Hawaii and the revision of Marie Neal's In Gardens of Hawaii, promise to provide modern identification tools for the local flora.
